Silent and Deadly: Hiding Your Weapons in Plain Sight

Posted by SCF on

In the 2004 film “The Punisher” starring Tom Jane, the titular hero retrofits his apartment with all kinds of secret compartments and quick-access panels for the inevitable confrontation that will take place. In one instance, he adds a drawer for a pistol, activated with a quick bump to the table. Undoubtedly, the ability to call forth weapons on command is beyond cool, but can also be practical. While we may not all be targets of the mafia, having secret compartment furniture for your guns can have some unique benefits.

Security

As any responsible gun owner will tell you, safety is by far the most important consideration when it comes to firearms. Leaving your guns out for anyone to access or worse use can be a fatal mistake. There are options for the safety-conscious out there, but most of the time it is locked cabinets or gun safes. While these certainly provide a good defense for your weapons, they are a bit conspicuous and, in the case of cabinets at least, can be easily broken into.

Fortunately, having furniture with covert compartments can allow you to store your weapons safely and without drawing attention. Demand for furniture with clandestine storage is rising, so thankfully there are more options to choose from than ever before. As a result, you can hide your guns in tables, shelves, drawers; basically, anywhere you can imagine, you can put a gun in it. Since they will be out of sight, and their presence will be unknown, this can provide better security (though not always) than a safe or cabinet.

Cost

Another way that secret compartment furniture provides benefits is that it is extremely well built. Because more care has to be taken in the production of the piece (to allow for the compartments), it results in more solid furniture; items that can be passed down for generations. With today’s mass produced furniture where particle board and flimsy fasteners are the norm, it is nice to know that Secret Compartment Furniture still uses real wood and screws. This means purchasing Secret Compartment Furniture is a smart decision whether you want secret compartments or not.

In addition to the cost efficiency of buying furniture that will last a lifetime, secret compartment units are also a much cheaper alternative to buying gun safes for all of your weapons. If you are like us, you have a sizable arsenal of guns of varying sizes and weights. Rifles, shotguns, handguns, semi-autos; buying safes or reliable, secure storage for all of them can be expensive. By purchasing furniture with built-in sections to hold these guns, you can save the money that would otherwise be spent on a safe. And since the furniture piece will be used for its primary purpose, you’re basically getting two items for one price.

Space Saver

Although most secret compartment furniture is built with guns or other weapons in mind, it’s still extra storage space. This means that, even if your stock of weapons is less than the space available, you can still use the extra room for other items. Due to the clandestine quality of the furniture, however, these compartments would be best used to store items that aren’t used on a regular basis. You can even use this storage for a disaster kit. Most people are unprepared for a natural disaster, so having a cache of supplies on hand in case of an emergency can be a life saver. Most likely you already have something in place, so having covert furniture can give you a better place to store it.

While secret storage furniture has its benefits, and can easily be the coolest thing that you own, there are some downsides to it. First of all, if you have children in your house, you need to make sure that the compartments aren’t easily found by curious and prying eyes. For some reason, kids are exceptionally good at finding things, whether by accident or on purpose, so it’s imperative that you take steps to prevent them from discovering anything dangerous. Some Secret Compartment Furniture designs come with locking mechanisms, but most do not. Keep in mind however, that locks from low-tech to high-tech can be easily installed on most items if your circumstances require it. None of the locks we use are visible from the exterior, so stealth is maintained.

Besides children, if you are ever the victim of a home invasion or robbery, your weapons stash may be discovered and plundered with relative ease. A safe can be difficult to crack, but a piece of hardwood furniture can be quickly dismantled or destroyed. While it’s hard to anticipate what will be found and what won’t, it’s just a good idea to keep in mind that whatever you store may become the target of thieves, should this scenario ever play out.

Ultimately, as long as you keep a level head and make smart decisions as to what kind of furniture to buy and where to store your weapons, secret compartment units can be a great asset to any gun owner. And should you ever become the target of the mob, then you’ll have the upper hand when the inevitable happens.
