Secret Weapons: Clandestine Storage for Deadly Devices

Posted by SCF on

We’ve all been there; you’re home alone, watching TV. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a team of trained assassins burst through your door or window with one goal in mind; your elimination. They come at you hard and fast, confident that they’ve caught you unprepared. However, it is they who are unprepared, as you quickly pull out your weapon of choice from a nearby chair and defend yourself. But how did you do it? The answer is simple: secret compartment furniture.

Even if you haven’t been in that exact situation (yet), furniture that can safely and covertly store your guns and weapons is not something out of a comic book. There is an entire market out there dedicated to making sure that your weapon of choice is never out of arm’s reach. Sitting in your favorite recliner when a bear crashes through your wall? Hidden rifle stored in the armrest. Playing pool when a crazed gunman bursts into the room? Pistol hidden within the pool table. There’s no limit to the number of places you can store your deadly devices, and no shortage of scenarios where pulling one out at a moment’s notice doesn’t look totally awesome. Here we’ll talk about the advantages (and disadvantages) of storing your weapons in the least likely space.

Extra Storage

While this may seem entirely obvious, creating more storage where there was previously none is always a good thing. Countertops and flat spaces create and attract clutter; by installing or buying furniture with hidden storage, you increase your overall space. Even if the storage area were designed with guns in mind, you could easily use it for other items, such as supplies for a power outage or natural disaster. According to the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA), over 70% of civilians are unprepared for a natural disaster. Having the extra storage space can help make sure that you aren’t part of that statistic.

Cost Effective

When it comes to firearms, safety is always a primary concern. Making sure that your guns are stored securely and locked away is a top priority for your home, especially if you have children. Fortunately, by creating secret compartments in your furniture, you can make sure that your weapons are secure without having to buy bulky or costly gun safes. Just make sure that your kids don’t know about or can’t easily find your stash (ideally by keeping them out of reach), and you can have a much more affordable solution to securing your firearms.

Awesome Factor

We alluded to this earlier, but there’s nothing quite like being able to pull out a weapon at a moment’s notice, no matter where you are. Especially if the storage is automated, being able to call your guns or knives to you with the press of a button or the flick of a switch can certainly have enough appeal to make it worth the investment regardless of any practical benefits. Who hasn’t wanted to pull out a secret weapons stash like a secret agent?

Safety

While hiding your guns in plain sight may seem like an easy and efficient solution to store them, you need to make sure that they cannot be found or exploited by the wrong person. Because it only requires that you open the compartment (as opposed to cracking a safe), theoretically anyone can find and use your weapons. Ideally you would keep your guns stored in a compartment, but your ammunition in another covert location. As we mentioned, if you have children it’s imperative that you prevent them from accidentally finding your stash, lest there be a terrible accident as a result. Additionally, if you are a victim of a home invasion or robbery, thieves will be sure to check every nook and cranny. If your stash has thousands of dollars worth of weaponry, it could be a huge loss if it’s found. Plan accordingly.

Longevity

Depending on how often you use your weapons, you may stash your firearms in your furniture and not touch them for months or years. To make sure that everything continues to work correctly and doesn’t break down, you will need to check periodically on your stash (or stashes) to make sure that everything is looking good. If necessary, test your equipment to make sure it functions properly. This is also especially true if your stash contains perishables or emergency rations. Batteries corrode after a while, so check on flashlights or any other battery-powered device to make sure that the batteries haven’t expired.

Overall, the decision to get furniture that contains secret compartments is based on your needs. In the past few years, there has been a surge of interest for this type of furniture, so fortunately there are more options than ever when it comes to clandestine storage. It may seem like a good idea to upgrade all of your major fixtures, but it’s important first to assess your stock and what would make the most sense. If your stash is exclusively for firearms, vertical storage options are probably best. If you want to make an emergency stash with food and supplies, then a large box-style compartment would be ideal. Also, keep in mind who you want to have access to the compartment, and how likely it would be that it could be discovered by accident. If you plan correctly, then those trained assassins will never see you coming.
